If that research were universally accurate, no company would ever go out of business. They have the research that says otherwise. You might get more benefits by reaching out to some of the market leaders to see if they provide any type of training or resources, Ive been working alot with Pure Storage lately which is far and away better than the Nimble, Netapp and HP stuff ive used in the past, and they seem crazy flexible when it comes to pricing and stuff so it couldnt hurt to reach out to them and see if maybe they have some cloud lab offering you can utilize. Sure there as somethings that are still useful to teach them such as FC, Iscsi, raid, volumes, snapmirrors etc etc, but those concepts are universal and you dont need the Nimble to teach them that.

My 2 cents is this, technology is changing at a rapid pace, teaching them a 7-10 year old Nimble platform is only going to help them in the event they are employed somewhere still running that ancient hardware and truth be told if they find employment in an envrionment such as that they need to get out ASAP anyways because thats a no win situation. I do get you arent using it in prod, but some other cheap ass company with no IT budget sure would try to repurpose that for prod and it would just be a mess.

The problem is really twofold, one is they want you to upgrade as you mentioned rather then have you running legacy hardware (even if its educational) and the second (which I do understand) is they arent giving it to you because whats to stop someone from using EOL hardware years and years past the expiration date, that opens up so many cans of worms its not even funny. Absolutely nothing, and that's what they will remember when the HPE rep comes begging at their future company for sales. What have they learned about HPE and Nimble? Nothing. Now our students are learning FreeNAS/TrueNAS which is installed on an old Avamar. HPE basically saying ' Screw you', and ' Buy new hardware and throw the old Nimble in the landfill' There wasn't anything secret about it because it was hardware dependent.

Not too long ago, before HP bought Nimble, you could download the NimbleOS right on Nimble's website. I've explained to them that they are leaving a very bad impression upon the future of IT. This type of conversation with HPE can go on for hours. "We can't give you a support contract because you are EOL". "But since you don't have a support contract, we can't give it to you". But you do have the legacy NimbleOS, right? YES. "We don't sell support contracts for hardware that is EOL". "You don't have a support contract" Ok, can we purchase a support contract? NO. The array is EOL two years ago, but since we are looking to teach students the NimbleOS, you would think we could load a legacy version of NimbleOS on this hardware. We often 'purchase' or get donated hardware for the lab, one item being a Nimble CS220 Array 'purchased' through a government auction. We run an educational lab for students to learn hardware so they may be more effective to employers upon graduation.
